Hi WINGS Family,

There has been a slight problem with our Etowah Mounds trip.

Due to budget cuts, they are only open on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

I have rescheduled the trip to Etowah Mounds on Friday, November 13th. We will meet at 1:00. We will go on a self-guided tour, watch a movie, and see a tools & weapons demonstration.

The cost is based on a group of 15 or more:
5 and under: $1.00
children, 5 and up: $3.00
adults: $4.00

Youth Movie Night!

Hi WINGS family!

I hope you're having a great start to school!

This year, we are offering our youth some special outings! If your child is 6th grade or up, they are considered youth!

These outings will be where you, the parent, can drop them off according to where we are meeting and what time. You are not required to stay with them.

As we would appreciate your involvement with these outings, we also recognize younger siblings would need to be with you. This is a special time where the youth will get to be with kids their own age without younger siblings.

Please help me make this possible. There will be times when we will need chaperones and we will be asking for the parents' help! Just know that my husband and I will always be with your kids.

Our first special night is THIS Saturday, August 29, at 5:00 pm. for Movie Nights with pizza.

"Movie Nights" is a Focus On the Family book which sparks spiritual discussions about what is discussed in the movie.

We will be watching "Finding Neverland". The movie is rated PG.

The cost for the evening is $3.00 per student for pizza.

We will meet at Heritage Baptist at 5:00 and will be back at 10:00 pm. You can either drop them off at the church or drop them at the Burwicks (5471 Cathers Creek Dr, Hiram)

Next month, we will be going to Stone Mountain on Sept 19. Times announced later.

We are very excited about the things that our youth are going to get to do this year!

Seller Info: The seller fee is $5 and must be paid upon registration.
This applies to each seller.
All sellers must register by May 31st.
Tables will be provided. Sellers are responsible for selling their homeschool goods. Therefore, sellers must remain at their tables for the duration of the sale. Sellers are responsible for collecting money for their goods.

Volunteers are needed: Please sign up and receive early shopping privileges.

Shoppers: We can accept cash/change only. Checks are at the discretion of the seller.

Children: We require shoppers keep children with them. Do not allow children play in the building or with sale items.

What can you sell?
Anything relative to homeschooling. Educational curriculum, books, board, readers, chapter, novels, literature, reference, etc. Workbooks , unit studies, how to books, guides, manipulatives, canvas charts, timelines, educational supplies, educational games, software, puzzles, art/craft books and/or supplies, coloring books, art history books, art prints, composer study/music; flash cards, atlases/maps; parent resource books such as planning, organizing, cooking, child development, bible study, Christian living, etc.
If you are unsure, please ask.

VENDORS: Do you provide services or classes? We are providing space for vendor tables.

Standardized Testing Sign-up is Here!

WINGS is happy to announce that we will be offering standardized testing again this year. We will use the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) exam.

The testing dates are planned for April 27, 28 & 29, at Heritage Baptist Church. The times are to-be-determined, and will depend on the students’ grade levels. From my experience testing students last year, I do know that grades 3-8 are able to test together. I will have to wait until the tests are ordered to read the instructions and determine the schedule for any students older than 8^th grade, but I will definitely try to work out a schedule that accommodates everyone involved.

The cost will be $50 per student for WINGS members, or $55 for non-WINGS members. This includes the exam, covers all shipping costs, and you’ll get a full scoring report from BJU Press. Checks should be made out to me, Kelley Burwick.

The deadline to sign up & pay for your students to be tested is Friday, February 27^th. I will post a sign-up sheet and a payment envelope for our next two WINGS class days. We will be asking for parents to volunteer as helpers in some capacity (also to-be-determined, but I'll let you know).

Hi Everyone! It's already February! Before we know it, summer will be here.

Our homeschool group is sponsoring our first annual curriculum sale on Saturday, June 13th at Heritage. As you are winding down your year and finishing any curriculum, please save your items to sell at our curriculum sale. Items to be sold are to include, but not limited to, curriculum sets, books, educational games and puzzles, tapes, videos, and anything that you have used in your home.

We are inviting anyone to participate so please give out this information to any of your contacts or friends that might want to contribute. Feel free to pass this along to any other groups that you have access. Also, please give them my number to contact me to register.

King Tut Field Trip

WINGS Valentine Exchange

WINGS Valentine Exchange
February 11th

The children will have an opportunity to exchange Valentine Cards with their WINGS friends BEFORE clubs begin.

All you have to do is:
Bring Valentine Cards.
Bring a decorated box or basket with your child's name located on it. This will be his/her Valentine "mailbox."
Pick up your child's mailbox after clubs.

There will be tables set up in the gym, according to age groups, for their Valentine mailboxes.
You may need to help your child with his/her deliveries.

WINGS Schedule Changes

Hi WINGS Family,

We have a few changes in regards to upcoming WINGS events. Please note the changes on your calendar.

Sorry for the last minute notice, but the church will not be available for our use this week.

Therefore, we will not be meeting THIS Wednesday, January 21st to make Valentine cards together.

After some revaluation due to the cold/flu season, we have decided to postpone our nursing home outreach event which was scheduled for February 4th.

Instead of making Valentine cards for the nursing home, we will be making cards for children in need. The information is below.

Just make your Valentine cards at home, then bring them to our next WINGS events. They will be delivered to a drop off location on your behalf.

The children will still have the opportunity to exchange Valentine cards with their WINGS friends at our regularly scheduled Club Day on February 11th. Details will be announced in a separate e-mail and on the WINGS bulletin board.

On our February 4th Social Day, we will meet at Gorga Monkeys for an extended play day. The kids can use up their "extra" energy that has accumulated during these cold months, while the moms enjoy each others company. Details will be announced in a separate e-mail and on the WINGS bulletin board.

January 7th: We will not be meeting. Enjoy an extra week getting back into your school routine!

January 14th: Bowling at Stars & Strikes. (Details will be e-mailed to you shortly.)

January 21st: We will be meeting at HBC to make Valentine cards for the local nursing home and Valentine mailboxes for our Valentine card exchange. *We will deliver cards to the nursing home on February 4th. We will exchange Valentine cards on our regular Club Day on February 11th.

January 28th: First Day of WINGS Clubs. Yeah!

King Tut Exhibit - Field Trip for March

Greetings WINGS families,

I hope you all enjoyed the Christmas party today. Thank you, Terri for all your hard work and dedication. It was fun!

We are planning on attending the King Tut Exhibit for the March 18, 2009 field trip. I know it is months before March arrives. However, since this is such a big venue, we are required to pay in advance. We were able to get a group rate of $15 per student and $24 per adult. There is a 50% deposit required in December. The remaining balance will be due in January.

This is a self guided tour. You can participate in the audio tour (highly recommended) for an extra $6 per person. This is not mandatory, but does include valuable information not included on the tour. There is also an optional movie for an additional $5.

There is a teaching tutorial guide you can download prior to attending the field trip to help inform your student on Tut. Here's the link: http://www.kingtut.org/home. we have a great Christmas party planned for our kids! There will be games, crafts, food and book exchange.

Please bring a $5 (maximum) book or a gently used book for someone just like your child. (girl for girl; boy for boy). Try and keep to that age group also. Wrap it up and just put boy or girl and age on tag.

Also, please bring food according to the chart below:
Preschool: 2 liter drinks
K-3: desserts
4-9: finger food

Remember we have approximately 40-50 kids plus parents when planning for your food.

One more thing, please have each child bring scissors and glue and $1 to cover the cost of the crafts.

WINGS Shoe Box Drive

There has been a change of plans regarding the shoe box drive...

We will be taking the shoe boxes to Noah's Ark to donate to the resident children.

They are in need and it is a GREAT opportunity for our group to help them out.

Each family who wants to participate can take a shoe box home with them THIS Wednesday to wrap.

*There are also extra empty boxes to take if you would like to fill and decorate some more.

As of right now, we have a total of 10 "full" boxes consisting of toothpaste, chapstick, and deodorant.

Let's make it our goal to have at least 30 boxes to donate!

We still need donations of:
toothbrushes ~shoe box item of the week
socks
lotion
deodorant

You may also donate:
shampoo
wash clothes
gift cards
*special notes of Christmas wishes or drawings

So, this Wednesday pick up a box or two to take home. Then, bring the wrapped shoe box with you to the Noah's Ark field trip!

Michele and I, along with our sisters, took all of our children to see Goodnight Moon at the Alliance Theater on Friday. It was fantastic. Even the older children (as well as the adults) thoroughly enjoyed the show. Nutcracker tickets

I wanted to check and see if anyone in the group would be interested in purchasing tickets to see the Georgia Ballet dance the Nutcracker at the Cobb Civic Center on Tuesday, December 9th at 10:00 AM. It is a school show they put on for Cobb County students but they do extend the offer to home school students on the 9th and 10th. I am already purchasing tickets for the 9th and can get them for $6 each. If you are interested, but could only go on the 10th I could send you the form to fill out. The minimum ticket purchase is 10 tickets. We have seen the school show on several occasions and, in my opinion, they do a great job. Mrs. Claus comes out at the beginning and explains the story. There is also an intermission that allows the children to stretch their legs. If you (or anyone else) is interested, you all can give me the money to purchase the tickets on Friday. I can turn in the order on Saturday for us all. Thanks again and have a great day!

In the process of brainstorming through many ideas, it dawned on me, as much as I like to cook and bake, I should put that to good use. I have decided to do some holiday baking (pies, cookies, cakes, bars, muffins). Perhaps you aren't great in the kitchen, maybe your schedule is too hectic and you don't have time to make something homemade. Whatever the reason, I am your person! WINGS Spring Session

Greetings all!

We are preparing for the spring session and need to know if you are interested in teaching a class. There are a total of five class sessions we need to fill per grade level for two one hour periods. The schedule will be the same as this semester, we just need new teachers.

The age groupings are as follows: K-2nd, 3rd-5th, 6th-8th (we only need one instructor for this age group since Creative Writing will be carried over in to Spring semester).

All W.I.N.G.S. families should attend an informational meeting on October 22, 2008, at 1:15 @ HBC.

Deadline to sign up for teaching a class will be November 12, 2008.

Carrollton Agriculture Days

I have the address of the field trip if everyone wants to google map it from your own home that might be easier than me trying to give everyone directions: 900 Newnan Rd., Carrolton Ga 30117.

Younger children may come but just know it will be geared for children in 3rd grades and up. It will be a guided tour and will take an hour to go through.

The said we may picnic on the grounds there but they do not have any food for sale. If everyone wants to plan to picnic we can just bring it and eat after which will be around 1:00 or before and we will need to arrive at 11:00 so we will have time.

We have had a great response to this and I am so excited.

Ag Heritage Days

The University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Office for Carroll County would like to invite you and your class to participate in Ag Heritage Days on Thursday, October 16, at 12pm.

This educational program is designed to give students an up-close look at agriculture-past, present, and future. Students will tour the 19th century farmstead and experience life on the farm. There will be demonstrations of soap, candle, and candy-making. Students will see how butter was churned and quilts made, and observe skills of blacksmiths. There will be antique tractors and farm equipment, draft horses and mules, Indian artifacts, as well as exhibits on forestry, soil conservation, wildlife, vegetable production, sustainable agriculture, farm animals, farmland preservation, and chick hatching. a visit to the refurbished 1900's-era one-room schoolhouse will help your students visualize what it was like to attend classes before the era of computers and air conditioning.

Step Into Africa (World Vision Exerience: AIDS)

I wanted to invite everyone to attend the Step Into Africa Exhibit that Westridge Church will be hosting September 25th-29th. This is a way to step into the life of a child living in Africa that has AIDS. It is free and open to everyone. I hate to start the year off with a mistake...

I accidentally put the wrong date on the sign-up sheet for the Mom's Night Out.

Our MNO will always be on the third Sunday of the month.

I put September 14th on the sheet, instead of the correct date of September 21st.

What a great start!

Greetings to all,

Our school year is off to a great start! Thanks to the hard work and preparation of teachers and support staff, our kick off for the 2008-2009 school year was excellent. We had fifty children (not including small infants) at yesterday’s kick off.

It is with great pleasure that we welcome families to the new school year, especially the families that joined us recently. It was heart warming to see our “older children” being role models to their new friends and helping them to feel comfortable in the new environment. All the children are eager to discover and learn new things together with their new and old friends.

With wonderful children and supportive parents, we are sure to have a great school year ahead!

Kayla Johnson is a Senior homeschooler this year who lives in the East
Paulding area, attends West Ridge Church, who loves photography, and is
starting her photography business. This is something she has wanted to do
for a long time, and she is stepping out in faith and trying it.

She is currently offering family sessions, senior portraits, kids, newborns,
pregnancy shoots, modeling portfolio headshots, band promo shoots, etc. Her
fee is $75 for an hour session, at the location of your choice, with as many
poses and outfits as you want. Sessions can be shorter or longer than an
hour if necessary and the fee may be adjusted accordingly. You will receive
a cd of photographs (anywhere from 50 to 100) that you will be able to take
to your favorite photo processing location and have pictures made into the
sizes of your choice.

September Field Trip - Chattahoochee Nature Center

Join W.I.N.G.S. at Chattahoochee Nature Center on September 17, 2008, at 11 am.

Here is a description of what we will be learning.

Wildlife Discovery: A general introduction to nature and wildlife, students will explore the native plants and animals of the CNC through hands-on exploration and inquisitive observation. **If you choose to participate in the hike, please understand that strollers are not permitted due to the bumpy terrain.

Georgia Wildlife Journey: a guided tour of the Nature Center's permanent wildlife residents; owls, hawks, snakes, and a beaver are just a few of the animals the group will encounter!

The deadline for this event will be September 3, 2008.

There is a fee of $7 per person to attend. Make checks payable to Lisa Davis and you can give your payment to me at the Gorga Monkeys event. We have to have the field trip paid for in advance.

Bring a sack lunch and we will have a picnic on the grounds afterwords!

2008 Goergia Sales Tax Holiday

2008 Georgia Sales Tax Holiday - July 31-August 3, 2008

I’ve had a number of readers contact me, asking for further updates about the Sales Tax Holiday for 2008.

According to the Georgia Department of Revenue’s website, Georgia House Bill 948 provides for a sales tax exemption from both state and local sales taxes for certain items purchased July 31 – August 3, 2008.

The Bill also provides an exemption for specific energy and water efficient products purchased October 2 –5, 2008, with information pertaining to that specific holiday being released at a later date.

During the sales tax holiday of July 31 through August 3, 2008, a sales tax exemption applies to purchases of tangible personal property in the following categories:

Articles of Clothing. The exemption applies to articles of clothing and footwear with a sales price of $100 or less per item. Clothing accessories such as handbags, umbrellas, cuff links, handkerchiefs, jewelry, key cases, wallets, watches and watch bands, and ponytail holders and/or similar hair products are not exempt. In other words, they’re taxable. See link below of exempt items.
Personal Computers. A single purchase of $1,500 or less of personal computers and/or related accessories is exempt. If the single purchase exceeds $1,500, the entire transaction is taxable. See link below for exempt items.
General School Supplies. The exemption applies to the purchase of general school supplies with a sales price of $20 or less per item.

1/2 Price Laminating at Office Max

I was doing some research tonight on the free laminating that Office Max offered last year. It appears that they have decided against offering that again this year. They lost a lot of money on the deal. They are offering 1/2 price on laminating starting July 27, 2008 and will offer that on Thursdays until further notice.

I hope this information may help some of you. I know many of you took advantage of it last year.

I came across this interesting little idea tonight as I was browsing some blogs, so I thought I'd share it with y'all, because it's coming up later this month.

Basically, this website is offering an entire homeschool conference - with workshops, speakers, Q&A sessions, and even a vendor hall, ALL ONLINE. The dates are July 31-August 3, and the cost is $29.95.

You can either listen to the workshops live at their appointed times, or go online at your convenience and listen to the audio files. Of course, if you want to interact with the speakers, you have to be there when they're "live," (like an instant message chat room).

ITBS Testing Info

Hi everyone –

Since our testing dates are about a week away, I wanted to touch base with you all and let you know what I have planned. We have a total of five students taking the ITBS together this year: one in 3rd grade, one in 5th grade, one in 6th grade and two in 7th grade. All testing sessions will take place in the modular buildings at West Ridge Church (see map below).

The ITBS Testing Schedule is as follows:

Monday, July 14th from 9:30 a.m. to 12 noon:
· Introduction & Directions
· Vocabulary
· Reading Comprehension (Part 1)
· Reading Comprehension (Part 2)
· Spelling/Capitalization/Punctuation
· Usage & Expression

Tuesday, July 15th from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.:
· Math Concepts & Estimation
· Math Problem Solving & Data Interpretation
· Math Computation
· ***CALCULATOR USE*** This is a curriculum decision, according to the testing instructions. So, if your mathematics program incorporates the use of calculators for most types of computational tasks, it may be appropriate for your student(s) to use calculators during Part 1 of the Math Concepts test and all of the Math Problem Solving and Data Interpretation test. There should be no perceived disadvantage to the students, whether they are encouraged to use them or if they are not allowed to use them. The test items on these components were designed to minimize the computational effort the students would need to employ.

Tuesday, July 15th from 11:00 a.m. to 12 noon:
· 3rd grade ONLY
· Word Analysis
· Listening

Wednesday, July 16th from 9:30 a.m. to 12 noon:
· Social Studies
· Science
· Maps & Diagrams
· Reference Materials

***IMPORTANT!!***

PARENTS should do the following:
· Ensure a good night’s rest and a nutritious meal.
· Reassure the student that the test is not a “pass/fail” situation, and encourage him to do his best. Tell him/her that the purpose of the ITBS test results is to help you both understand how their school work is going, and help identify any areas where they may need extra help.
· Please arrive on time to all testing sessions, so as not to delay the group. It would be wise to arrive a few minutes early so your student does not feel rushed when we begin the first testing session.
· Plan to remain on-campus at West Ridge Church during ALL testing sessions. There will be a separate room for you to sit with your other child(ren), but you may want to bring something to keep them occupied. There will be breaks between testing components, so students will be allowed to quickly get drinks and/or use the bathroom.
· Please notify me IN ADVANCE if you intend for your student(s) to be allowed to use a calculator for the Math Concepts and Math Problem & Data Interpretation portions of the ITBS. (see above)
· Please notify me IN ADVANCE if your student(s) have any special needs that may affect their testing sessions.
· If you have any questions about the testing procedures, please contact me by e-mail or phone (678-401-4003 or 678-332-6010).

- Several sharpened No.2 pencils with Erasers
- Calculator (ONLY on Tuesday, if allowed – see above)

WINGS Annual Meeting cancelled

The annual meeting scheduled for Saturday, June 28, 2008 has been canceled. The purpose of this meeting in the past was to plan for the upcoming school year. This has already been done and I didn't find it necessary to disrupt your schedule unnecessarily.

We will meet on August 8, 2008 for the Open House. There have been some changes made for the 2008-2009 school year. Please come to hear about these changes and see what classes are being offered for the fall semester.

This is also a great time to invite potential new members!!

Hello again…..

I’m writing to you as I’m getting ready to order the ITBS tests for our group of students. I thought I would extend one last opportunity to anyone who may have overlooked my previous e-mail, or who may have decided to test their students since I sent that last message out.

Here is a quick overview of the details:

What – ITBS (Iowa Test of Basic Skills)
When – July 14-17 (I will send out detailed scheduling information for each grade-level grouping as we get closer to our testing dates.)
Where – West Ridge Church, Modular Bldgs.
Why – Standardized Testing, as per GA state homeschool law
How Much –Please send me a check for $50.00, made out to Kelley Burwick. Once I receive all of the payments, I will order the tests and pay for them all at once. The deadline to have your payments to me is Monday, June 9th. I would like to order them as soon as possible, however, so I will go ahead and order the exams sooner if I receive payments from everyone who previously expressed interest in testing.

God's World News is a weekly current events magazine for kids, from a Christian perspective. They have four different reading levels. These are similar to the Weekly Readers we grew up with, just more God-centered. Their group rates are really amazing, so please take the time to check out their products on this website:

If there is any interest, I will order as a group for distribution at our WINGS classes weekly. Again, these are really high quality, and easy to incorporate into homeschool.

UPDATE: Beginning Fall 2008, the format will be monthly, rather than weekly... sorry for not noticing this change earlier. I still consider this to be a quality product.

Alternatively, WORLD magazine is targeted for teens/adults and is similar in format to TIME magazine, but again, from a Christian perspective. With the upcoming election, this is a fantastic time to immerse our young people in current events. I have not found a better forum for this than WORLD, although I have not agreed with everything... great way to teach 'discernment'. There are group options for this as well, but they do not combine with the God's World News. I know the subscription price is daunting, but this is an amazing weekly resource for parents as well as teens. You can find info about this at the above website.

Since we are unable to meet for classes next week, I thought it would be nice to have a social event. How does swimming sound?? S. Cobb Aquatic Center has open swim from 2-4. The cost to swim is $2.12 per swimmer. We will meet on Thursday, March 27, 2008.

This is a really nice indoor facility. They have a lazy river, a cork screw slide, and a nice toddler play area. We would love it if you could join us. Hope to see you there!!
